Using Fiscal Calendars

next generation

Set up a fiscal calendar in Wdesk to create a list of reporting dates to choose from when tagging facts in your document. After you set up the fiscal calendar, select it in the XBRL profile for your document. Make sure to update your fiscal calendars when rolling forward.

Create Fiscal Calendars

To create a fiscal calendar:

  1. Open the document and click Show XBRL.

  2. On the XBRL toolbar, click Fiscal Calendars.

  3. Click New Calendar in the Fiscal Calendar dialog box.

  4. Name the calendar and select the period frequency:

    • Annual creates only fiscal year-end dates.

    • Quarterly creates quarter-end dates for all four quarters.

    Create fiscal calendars

  5. If your fiscal dates match the standard calendar dates, select On Calendar. When selecting this option, Wdesk creates dates for previous years, the current year, and future years.

  6. Click Create and either review the on-calendar dates or add your company’s fiscal dates if they are off-calendar dates.

  7. Click Close to finish.

You can now select the fiscal calendar for the document profile and use these dates when tagging facts.

Rename Fiscal Calendars

To rename a fiscal calendar:

  1. Open the document and click Show XBRL.

  2. On the XBRL toolbar, click Fiscal Calendars.

Archive Fiscal Calendars

Archive calendars when you no longer need them. Archiving a calendar removes it from the list of calendars for all users. You can restore archived fiscal calendars at any time. Archiving does not delete the calendar and it does not change the dates in your document.

To archive a fiscal calendar:

  1. Open the document and click Show XBRL.

  2. On the XBRL toolbar, click Fiscal Calendars.

  3. Select the fiscal calendar you want to archive from the drop-down list.

  4. Click the gear icon and select Archive.

    Archive fiscal calendars

Restore Fiscal Calendars

To restore an archived calendar:

  1. Click the fiscal calendar list, select Archived calendars, and select the fiscal calendar you want to restore.

  2. Click Restore fiscal calendar and click Close to finish.

    Restore fiscal calendars

Best Practices

When creating a fiscal calendar with off-calendar dates, we recommend including the following time periods in your fiscal calendars:

  • Create the current year, two years in the future, and two years prior for all four quarters. For example, if the current it is Q4 2020, enter dates for Q1 - Q4 for the years 2018 - 2022.

  • Include the previous year’s Q4 end date. For example, if the earliest time periods are Q1 - Q4 2018, also add the Q4 2017 date to provide full-year context for 2018.
