This article describes how to create and edit a bar chart to display on one or more dashboards. To edit the dashboard itself, see Using Dashboards to View Data.
Adding an Existing Bar Chart to a Dashboard
To open a dashboard, choose Dashboards in the navigation menu and then click on the name of a dashboard.
To add an existing bar chart to the dashboard, click the Insert icon in the dashboard toolbar.
In the Insert from Library dialog, choose the Charts tab. Existing bar charts will be identified by the bar chart icon to the left of the chart name. Choose a chart from the list of charts.
A preview of the chart will appear in the dialog box. Click the green Insert button in the lower right-hand corner of the dialog box to add the chart to your dashboard.
The chart will appear in the next available space in your dashboard.
Creating a New Bar Chart
To create a new chart for a dashboard, open Dashboards from the navigation menu. Then open the desired dashboard by clicking on its name. Then click the Insert button on the dashboard toolbar.
In the Insert from Library dialog that opens, click the Charts tab, then Create New Chart.
Choose the report that will serve as the source for the chart from the drop-down, and click Select.
Once you’ve selected a report, the Edit Chart panel will open on the right. This panel contains the features and options to help populate your chart. Select the bar chart type using the drop-down at the top of the Edit Chart panel.
Under the Data tab in the Edit Chart panel, choose the appropriate icon to display the bars horizontally or vertically.
Once you’ve chosen the orientation for your bar chart, you’ll set the X and Y axes. Click the field in the panel below the X and Y-axis labels. This will give you a drop-down menu of available data types for each axis. Select your preferred data type. The chart preview will automatically update.
The default aggregation is Count, but you may also choose an alternate aggregation option. Hover over the formula (fx) sign on the right-hand side of the chosen axis and click the drop-down arrow that appears to view the aggregation options. Learn more about these aggregations in Working with Reports.
The Group By Color feature allows you to segment your aggregated values by color using an additional dimension.
This feature enables you to provide further visual detail for the data you are communicating with your chart. This action will also display the chart legend.
Creating Stacked and Cluster Bar Charts
If you’ve assigned a Group By Color dimension in a bar chart, you can also choose whether to display your grouped bars as stacked or cluster. Stacked charts commonly display parts of a whole, and clustered charts are useful for analyzing trends between category groups. Choose the appropriate icon for a stacked or cluster bar chart in the Edit Chart panel.
Under the Format tab, you can choose bar color for each category by clicking on the colored square next to the category label. The Chart Legend switch allows you to show or hide the legend. Chart Axis titles can also be shown or hidden if needed using the available switches in this panel.
Clicking a color square will display a color selector for each pie slice. To turn the legend at the bottom of the chart on or off, use the Chart Legend switch. To add labels to slices, click the link under Slice Label and choose from the available labels.
When you are finished modifying your chart, click the Save button in the upper left-hand corner.
Name your chart, then click Save & Insert to add the chart to your Dashboard.
Editing Bar Chart
To edit an existing dashboard bar chart, hover over the chart and click the View in Reports icon that appears in the upper right.
In the Edit Chart panel on the right, options for editing your chart are found under the Data and Format tabs. At the bottom left, you can switch between Chart View, Table View and Data View using the tabs. Once done editing, click Save in the toolbar to update the chart on your dashboard.
